This year my wife and I set off for Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, March 28th driving directly into a storm. We left our home at 5:00 AM past Magic Mountian on the 5 freeway a little before 6 AM then got stuck in two traffic jams for over 45 minutes while crossing over the Grapevine, also on the 5 freeway. Once over the grapevine, we merged onto the 99. We continued on the 99 all the way to Sacramento.
In Sacramento, we merged onto highway 50 where we were greeted by rain, and as we climbed into the mountains, snow. We came to a stop on the road where Cal Trans personnel made sure that each car had either a four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive with chains. We traveled in snow for the next 30 miles until we reached Lake Tahoe. The road we traveled had a powdering of snow making it slow traveling.
Lake Tahoe over the past three months has received record snowfall. This year's snowfall is the second most ever recorded. The snow that the area received this Tuesday pushed the area past the 82-83 season into 2nd place all-time with something like 600 inches of snowfall.
